Entrance to Rock Island Bridge attraction

Rock Island Bridge — Kansas City, MO

Client: Rock Island Bridge Project Team
General Contractor: LG Barcus & Sons
IOS Division: IOS Kansas City & Design Supply Doors

Overview

The Rock Island Bridge project transformed a long‑abandoned railroad bridge into the world’s first entertainment district built over a river. With national and international attention on the build, the project required precise coordination across openings, specialties, and installation.

When the project began, Design Supply Doors and IOS were contracted separately for different scopes of work. Design Supply Doors managed Division 10 specialties and installation, while IOS supplied the Division 8 openings. By the time the bridge reached completion, the two companies had joined forces through acquisition — allowing one unified team to celebrate the project’s grand opening together.

Scope of Work

IOS and Design Supply Doors provided a comprehensive package of Division 8 and Division 10 materials, including:

  • Toilet partitions
  • Toilet accessories
  • Custom, in‑house fabricated bike racks
  • Sliding windows
  • Fire protection specialties
  • Life safety equipment (including rope and life preservers)
  • Corner guards
  • Hollow metal doors and frames
  • Allegion locks and NGP flat goods

Design Supply Doors handled installation for the Division 10 scope, while IOS supplied the Division 8 openings that supported the bridge’s revitalization.

Key Challenges & Solutions

A first‑of‑its‑kind project: Opened to the public as of April 1st, the bridge’s transformation drew global interest, increasing pressure on execution, quality, and coordination.

Managing delays: Stop‑and‑start conditions required a flexible, steady team capable of remobilizing quickly and maintaining continuity.

A deteriorated structure: The bridge had been neglected for years prior to renovation. IOS and Design Supply Doors supplied durable, code‑compliant materials that supported the structural and safety requirements of the revitalized space.

Through consistent communication, adaptable scheduling, and integrated material supply, both teams helped keep the project moving despite its complexities.

Why Integration Mattered

Although IOS and Design Supply Doors began the project as separate partners, the acquisition that brought them together by the end of construction highlights the value of unified coordination.

Managing openings, specialties, and installation under one combined team reduces handoffs, simplifies communication, and ensures that every product — from doors and frames to partitions, signage, and life‑safety equipment — works together seamlessly.

On a project where timing, precision, and visibility were essential, integration created a smoother path to completion and a stronger foundation for future work.
